The Foundation Summer School gives students the opportunity to experience the disciplines taught on Foundation at Kingston School of Art. Each day will focus on a different subject area (Fine Art, Fashion and Fabrication, Visual Communication and 3D Design) and is led by an experienced Foundation tutor who specialises in that field. The Summer School is a valuable bridge between school or college and university-level teaching, and is an excellent opportunity to experience Foundation at KSA before studying here.

The course will focus on the importance of visual research, drawing, idea generation and conceptual thinking, and introduces the Foundation approach and ethos. Students will be encouraged to participate in constructive group discussions and informal reviews of work. As well as generating and developing new outcomes, this is an exciting opportunity to build confidence in selecting, showing, and presenting work.

Course Structure

Day 1: Visual Communication – Participants will be introduced to the fundamental pillars of Visual Communication such as audience, tone of voice and developing a visual language. Through practical, materially-driven exercises, participants will gain confidence developing their idea generation, conceptually driven research and visual thinking - experimenting across text, image and animation.

Day 2: Fine Art – Participants will be introduced to a range of contemporary Fine Art practices including elements of performance, text, drawing, sculpture and critical research. We will engage in exciting discussions about the role of the artist in the 21st Century and explore the ways in which art can be shared outside of the conventional gallery context, such as publications, interventions and online.

Day 3: Fashion and Costume – Participants will explore designing for the body. Through investigating texture, swatches movement and character as well as building on drawing as an important developmental skill to communicate a garment's purpose and personality as well as for design documentation. As fashion designers where does our inspiration come from and how can we design in a responsible and sustainable way?

Day 4: 3D Design – On this last day participants will explore a number of methods and processes, focusing on the importance of thinking through making, material experimentation introducing the fundamentals of 3D design. We will engage in a series of mini workshops, introducing new skills covering areas such as model making, material craft and structural exercises. This day will culminate in a round up and opportunity for a dedicated Q+A session about KSA Foundation.
