Windrush Then and Now: A Day to Reflect and Celebrate

The arrival of the Windrush generation has helped build and shape the face of not only Islington but of the UK as a whole.

The Windrush generation has changed British Culture for the better and we want to take this opportunity to recognise, celebrate and reflect on the tremendous contributions the Windrush generation and their descendants have made and continue to make to society.

We encourage all communities to join us virtually, as we mark the fourth national Windrush Day and 73 years since the SS Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex.

Speakers:

This event will be hosted by Colin Adams MBE, Director of Brickworks Community Centre.

Our keynote speaker is broadcaster, oral historian and composer Alex Pascall, OBE.

Award-winning poet, writer and artist Theophina Gabriel will be performing her poem Back Home; which is inspired by the migration of people from the Caribbean to the UK and explores the injustice of the Windrush scandal.

North London’s very own MC Bushkin founder and front man of the Infamous group the Heartless Crew, will speak from a 3rd generation perspective. He will speak on his Windrush generation elders and how they have impacted his life today.

This event will give room to genuine and poignant discussions surrounding the strength and resilience of the Windrush generation and the brave decision they made to leave their homes and come and help rebuild Britain and what it took to pave the way for their descendants and those who have come after them.
