Do you enjoy working behind the scenes and making a real difference? Are you organised, enjoy handling clothing items, and want to support a meaningful cause?
This is an ongoing volunteering opportunity. Please contact the organiser to agree specific arrangements.
We’re looking for friendly, dependable volunteers to join us as Volunteer Stock Sorters.
Purpose of this role
To support North London Hospice in its mission to provide compassionate care and support to individuals with life-limiting illnesses, as well as to their families and carers. The role of the Stock sorter is vital in helping to general essential income through the Hospice’s network of retail shops. This role involves preparing items behind the scenes to ensure they are ready for sale, including refreshing donations to make them presentable, adding pricing labels, and selecting items suitable for the shop floor. By supporting the retail operation in this way the stock sorter directly contributes to the ongoing provision of specialist palliative care services within the community.
Main tasks
- Preparing donated items for sale
- Using a clothes steamer to ensure clothes look their best
- Attaching labels and tags to donated items for easy browsing
- Pricing of donations
- Identifying unsaleable donations for recycling
- Keeping the stock room tidy and organised.
What are we looking for?
A safe and confident approach to manual handling, able to handle manual handling tasks safely and responsibly.
Reliability and punctuality, with a flexible attitude to supporting our retail operations
A friendly, respectful manner, representing North London Hospice with warmth and professionalism when dealing with customers, items and great customer service.
A team spirit, with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, with a willingness to 'muck in’ – whether that’s sifting through donations, sorting or preparing items for sale.
Experience, ideally with some experience in a retail setting, someone who is willing to learn new skills and engage in the training provided.
Our hospice values at heart – compassionate, open, respectful, empowering, and collaborative – and a belief in the power of volunteering to make a difference.

An individual support plan will be created to ensure your safety and comfort in the role.
Equal opportunities
In everything we do at the hospice, we want to ensure that our volunteers feel they are part of an inclusive environment, where they are welcome, and difference is respected and celebrated. We can only make this possible by making sure the hospice is accessible to all and has a wide range of people volunteering for us.
We therefore actively welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented in volunteering at the hospice, including, for example, those from ethnic minority, disabled, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds.
