Online sessions 12:00-14:00 every Thursday 26 September - 21 November 2024.

This course covers the critical reading skills you need to help you with your assignment writing: understanding academic texts; linking critical thinking and reading; analysing and evaluating academic texts; effective reading strategies; effective note taking strategies; linking your critical reading to writing critically. On this course you will learn how to analyse texts effectively (what is the author's main point? What is the author's purpose? What arguments are used? What evidence is presented? What are the underlying assumptions and biases?). You will also learn how to critically evaluate texts (Is the argument logical? Is there sufficient evidence? Is it reliable? Do the arguments support the main point? Are other conclusions possible?) You will learn effective reading strategies and how to plan and write in a critical style.

This programme of online short courses and tutorials is open to everyone to improve your academic performance and employability. It may be particularly suitable for:

  • International students whose first language is not English

  • Home students who would like to develop their academic and professional communication skills

  • Students who have not studied in the UK before

All our classes will be broadcast live online and we hope you can participate in the live sessions. Recordings of our classes will also be available on Canvas for you to watch in your own time.
