This performance is a personal perspective on Apartheid and its impact in South Africa and the world today.
An axe, an eviction notice, a passbook and a camera will appear onstage to share their stories of events they witnessed under Apartheid. How did the axe disrupt a Sunday lunch? Who was evicted from their homes? And where are the children? The objects will tell you about dark moments that shaped South Africa’s cultural and economic landscapes today.
They will speak from their perspectives: a photographer’s chest, a front door, a woman’s purse and a student’s fist. We feel that, 30 years into South Africa’s democracy, Apartheid is still something that needs to be looked at. We invite you to come and look. Featuring folk songs, roses and bottle caps. Made and performed by Lara van Huyssteen.
‘That Boy Has No Shoes’ takes its title from a Friday afternoon in 2004 when Lara understood the economic divide in democratic South Africa for the first time. She has written this show to create increased visibility for Apartheid history and pledges any profit she may earn to buy shoes for children in her hometown, George, in South Africa.
